Alexei Jankowski (1968) & Alexander Sokurov (1951): El saqueo del Museo Nacional de Iraq en Bagdad (2013)

El director de cine ruso Alexei Jankowski (1972) ayudante del también director ruso Alexander Sokurov (1951 -conocido por la película, filmada en el Palacio de Invierno, hoy en el Museo del Hermitage, en San Petersburgo,  El arca rusa -Русский ковчег, 2002-, estrenado en el Festival de Cannes, y por Fausto, León de Oro en el Festival de Venecia en 2011) está preparando una exposición para recordar el expolio del Museo Nacional de Iraq, en Bagdad, acontecido hace diez años, cuando fue atacado por saqueadores -las principales obras fácilmente transportables, por suerte, estaban en cajas fuertes desde el inicio de la guerra entre Iraq e Irán en 1980-, coordinados o no con negociantes de arte, ante la inicial pasividad de las tropas norteamericanas que acababan de ocupar la ciudad.

Esta muestra, que tendrá lugar en los Museos Reales de Arte e Historia de Bruselas (Bélgica), consistirá en una proyección, en varias pantallas de gran superficie, de un documental compuesto a partir de fotografías y filmaciones enviadas por todos aquellos que han podido visitar este y otros museos iraquíes desde que cerraron en 1980.
El Museo Nacional de Iraq sigue cerrado al público, y solo puede ser visitado, tras solicitar un permiso, por alumnos, diplomáticos y trabajadores (empresarios, comerciales, investigadores) extranjeros. Suele estar vacío, y solo se abren a visitas concertadas las salas neo-asiria, sumeria e islámicas. 
La mayoría de los museos y archivos iraquíes fueron dañados o saqueados, y siguen en general vacíos y cerrados (una excepción: el Museo de Artes y Tradiciones Populares de Bagdad, cerrado -aunque se pueda visitar si se solicita un permiso- , pero en buen estado).

Fotografías y documentales del equipo formado por Pedro Azara, Marcel Borràs, Albert Imperial y Marc Marín -realizados en Iraq, a finales de 2011, gracias a una beca de la Fundación alemana Gerda Henkel-, parcialmente mostrados en la exposición Antes del diluvio. Mesopotamia 3500-2100 aC (Caixaforum, Barcelona & Madrid, 2012-2013) formarán parte de este proyecto, que podría incluir también material gráfico -fotos y filmaciones- de los años 2009 y 2010 (por Tocho).

"A request of help for the research for an exhibition in Brussels

Dear Colleagues,

An opportunity has arisen to organise an exhibition in the Royal Galleries, in
the very centre of Brussels, to attract public attention to the situation of
the archaeological sites in Iraq and to the international effort to protect our
common historical and cultural heritage in Mesopotamia.

The "story", the dramatic vehicle of the exhibition, is going to be the events
in the Iraqi Museum in 2003 and the international response to recover the
looted items. This should allow us to speak of a whole complex of different
issues that led to the current dramatic situation, and of the ways to cope with
it.

The exhibition is going to be a multimedia projection on the walls of a large
newly opened underground space ; it allows us to show quite a lot of different
materials.

The impact of the exhibition will entirely depend on the quality and quantity
of these materials. Let me therefore kindly ask the subscribers of the
Iraqcrisis list to consider a contribution to our research with your advice,
and, if possible, with any contacts, references, photo and video sources on the
subject that you may wish to indicate.

The exhibition will be held under the artistic direction of Alexander Sokurov,
an internationally renowned Russian filmmaker who has made, among other things,
a number of films about museums, and specially about museums in wartime, and
who is a known actor in the field of cultural heritage protection in his
country. The exhibition will be held in connection to a retrospective of
Alexander Sokurov's documentaries in the Cinema de Galeries, from September
until November 2013, and an important media coverage is expected.
